Timex Weekender Review

As its name suggested, The Timex Weekender is readymade for casual weekend wear. However, this watch most ubiquitous analog watch in the entire United States, most frequently spotted on a nylon strap used as an everyday option.

The Timex Weekender is a super versatile watch, comes in 3 categories.

  • Timex Unisex Weekender 38 mm
  • Timex Weekender 40 mm
  • Timex Weekender Chronograph 40 mm

Each category has a different dial color and strap option as well. In this article, you will have a closer look at those categories that will help you to choose the right one for you.

Timex Weekender Options

1. Timex Unisex Weekender

Face Design

The unisex version comes in 5 different dial colors. Black, White, Grey, Blue and Cream. Most people prefer the black or white dial but I love the Grey one with smoke-pumpkin nylon strap. At 38 mm, this Weekender can easily accompany any man’s wrist without overpowering it.

Timex Unisex Weekender

No matter which color you choose, you will get a classic clean round dial with big full Arabic numerals, and moving further inward there are smaller 24-hour military time number displays.

The Timex logo is printed in all caps, just under the 12 and 24. And the word Indiglo is typed towards the bottom near the 6 and 18. It has a thin hour and minute hands in the back to match the numbers and accents. In White, Black and Cream face, the second hand is red in color. Blue and Grey face has an identical second hand color of hour and minute hands.

Crystal

The mineral glass is supposed to be scratch resistant but it is a little less prone to scratches. Also it is quite flat and flush with the bezel, does not stick its head out and asks for scratches either. So, in all likelihood, it will stand the test of time as a daily wearer!

Movement

The Timex Weekender has a very reliable Timex quartz movement, not mechanical, that will run for good 3 years or more before you have to replace the battery. It’s definitely one of the louder ticking watches, and what the Weekender is sort of known for. So, if you find ticking watches (even quietly ticking ones) annoying, like me, then it’s not the watch for you. However, that is the only big downside of the super-reliable movement.

Straps

With either a white or black face you get one strap with your purchase, but you can add endless straps later – ultimately turning this watch into dozens for the price of a simple Nato, Perlon or leather strap. This is where the Weekender excels over other watches in the same budget class. It is available in an insane variety of colors, strap materials and options that make this watch one hell of a versatile watch.

Water Resistance

It has a very clean bezel, made of brass, on a steel case that is waterproof to 30 meters which means you can probably splash a bit of water on it but swimming and bathing are off-limits.

Luminous

It wouldn’t be a casual Timex watch without the ubiquitous Indigo night light that makes it easy to tell the time in the dark.

Customer Reviews

Elliott bought this watch because he Googled ‘cheap watches’ and this was the first result that came up. He wasn’t expecting too much, he was about to start a job that was predominately outside, and he needed a reliable way to tell time. He didn’t have the money yet for something really nice and more suited for the outdoors, and he figured this would get him to his first paycheck before breaking. Because he had brought the watch with replacing it already in mind, he didn’t treat it with care whatsoever, going about his daily business as he pleased. Surprisingly, his first paycheck came (and went), but the watch did not break. He figured, hey, it’s probably going to break soon anyway, so he might as well wait until it does and get his full use out of it.

This damned thing lasted for almost 2 years. He had no idea how it lasted through everything he put it through- extreme temperatures (sub-zero F to over 110 F), an industrial fryer (still have a nasty scar), exploding bags of chili, showers, pools, unexpected barn animal fluids, mud, snow, dropping it out of a moving car (by accident), throwing it off a cliff (for fun) and the never-ending dirt and dust – the face is all scratched to hell with his initials carved into the back, the band is faded and slightly smells of French fries, and there’s a huge scrape on the edge where I nearly died while rock climbing- but the face still lights up, and the hands still tell time.

Revisiting the page now, He says it’s gone up in price by a bit, but he definitely got his money’s worth, and it still hasn’t broken.

2. Timex Weekender 40 mm

Face Design

At a glance, you might think it is similar to Timex Weekender Unisex but if you look closely you can spot the difference. First of all its case diameter is 40 mm. 2 mm bigger than the Timex Weekender Unisex. It has the same classic clean round dial with big full Arabic numerals, and moving further inward there are smaller 24-hour military time number displays. In addition, you will get second/minute numerals on the outer circumference.

Timex Weekender 40

The hands look almost the same but you will get lume applied hour and minute hands. Also there is no red second hand in White and Black dial.

Crystal

The same mineral glass is used in this Timex Weekender 40 mm watch which is a little less prone to scratches.

Movement

The Timex Unisex Weekender and Timex Weekender 40 mm has the same Timex quartz movement, that will run for good 3 years or more before you have to replace the battery. Weekender is sort of known for its louder ticking sound. Timex Weekender 40 mm has retained the same quality.

Straps

Despite there is a small difference in dial size, both Timex Unisex and Weekender 40 mm watch has the same 20 mm width strap option. So you can play with its strap and they have a variety of strap options to choose from.

Water Resistance

30 meter water resistance makes it water splash resistant but not suitable for swimming and bathing.

Luminous

Of course you will get Timex Indigo electroluminescent panel as a backlight that makes it easy to tell the time in the dark.

Customer Reviews

After wearing watches sparingly his whole life, Richard decided recently to commit to wearing a watch for long-term. He eventually decided upon this 40mm Timex Weekender, and he couldn’t be happier. He said this Weekender was a simple, medium-sized piece in the style of a field watch with no additional complications. Pressing the crown activated Timex’s signature “Indiglo” lume, which was bright enough to read the face in pitch black conditions. Military 24 hour was displayed underneath the larger 12-hour digits, which was convenient. The navy blue face (which he bought) against the tan leather strap gave his watch a distinct look that stands out. The case was chrome plated to resemble the appearance of stainless steel. He had received more compliments on this $40 watch than he can remember.

He says this watch features a quartz movement, meaning it will maintain time consistently and accurately for years to come with very little deviation. His watch hasn’t lost a single second. He recommends to any newcomers to watches: this quartz watch as your first watch and an automatic as a second so that they may learn to enjoy and appreciate the nuances and strengths of both. The adjustable leather strap was comfortable and durable on the wrist but can be easily replaced with a NATO or stainless steel band if desired.

Many people reviewed the loudness of the second hand as it ticks around the watch. This was extremely exaggerated. When he received the watch, he was surprised when he remembered it was supposedly a loud nuisance. The tick was so soft he can only really hear it if he holds the watch to his ear, or if the room was extremely quiet and the watch was right next to his bed.

3. Timex Weekender Chronograph

Face Design

There are a lot of changes in this face design. First, you will notice the Arabic numerals at 2, 6, and 10 are occluded by the chronograph complications, and a date function is set next to the 4 o’clock position. 24 hour numerals are also pushed on the outermost ring of the dial, though they’re so small that it isn’t information you can gather at a glance.

Timex Weekender Chronograph

You have 6 dial color options in this Chronograph version. Unisex and Weekender had 5. White, Black, Grey, Blue and Cream. Green color is added in this version.

Hands are the same as Timex Weekender 40 mm, so as the crystal. Also you get similar straps, Water resistance and Luminous for Timex Weekender Chronograph.

Movement

This Timex Weekender Chronograph movement is known as the W92, which is the same movement Timex uses on their other chronographs. This is a quartz movement manufactured in the Philippines, and it’s probable that the case has the same origins. You need to replace the battery after a few years if you frequently use the “Indiglo” feature. Normally this battery runs for more than 3 years.

Customer Reviews

After wearing this for a few weeks, Cart finds this Timex Weekender Chronograph to be an excellent watch for this price! He also owns the black-faced Timex ‘non-chrono’ version that he had for over a year and it was a great, simple watch. He especially enjoys (and uses) the Indiglo feature! He admitted to having a watch fetish, but after retirement, he sold most of my watch collection and have only kept four watches. He bought these two Timex watches and found them to be fun, accurate, very usable and handy! He has read many negative comments about the tan leather watchband, but he is fine with it. He says it is thin but attractive and time will tell how long it will last.

Carolina was feeling very hesitant about whether to order this watch because of its size and chunkiness, but she loved it when she received it and it looks just fine on her small wrists! The watch looked and felt great, very good quality, the strap is also very soft and comfortable and she had worn it every day since she got it.

Buyers Guide

I hope you have read all detail and customer reviews above. Now if you wish to purchase any of this watch, here are some tips for you.

First of all, the Unisex version is 38 mm in diameter so it easily fits on a small wrist. So this is basically for both male and female obvious. But the 40mm version is also loved by female and some is using it. But if you have a bigger wrist I would suggest don’t go for Unisex version.

Secondly, it might happen that you liked a dial design but didn’t like the strap. In that case, you have to purchase the regular watch with a built-in strap and with that you can purchase a different strap. You won’t get any custom design watch here.

Check out some awesome NATO straps here.

Finally, if this is your first, don’t hesitate anymore. Timex Weekender is a simple, stylish, versatile and affordable antidote to the big watch trends in the market.

Timex Weekender Strap

As we have said, it is easy to remove the strap and get endless combinations of the weekender. Though there are no specific Timex Weekender Strap. You can use any 20 mm strap to your weekender.

Also if you’re into watches, chances are that you probably already have some extra 20mm straps laying around that you can have fun with on the Timex Weekender.

FAQs on Timex Weekender

Is Timex Weekender good?

With this price, I think this is the best choice after Casio. It’s a versatile watch and you can use it for more than 5/6 years, but you might have to change the battery after 3 years.

Is the Timex Weekender loud?

It is louder than any other branded watch but not that much to be irritated. You probably won’t hear it throughout the day. May be at night in a quiet room you can hear it if you put it on the bedside table. The solution is, at night put it in a drawer.

Is the Timex Weekender waterproof?

Yes, it is 30 meter water resistant but not preferred for swimming and bathing.

Do Timex watches have a lifetime warranty?

No, Timex watches don’t offer a lifetime warranty but the watches come with 1 year manufacturer warranty.

Who Should Buy A Timex Weekender?

If brand names and showpieces are not for you, then this could be a great pick. You don’t have to spend a lot and you have a classic, simple watch that will last you for years. And, with a few added straps, you can wear it doing sport, out on the town, to work or just relaxing on vacation.

Which is better Timex Weekender or Seiko 5?

Timex is well known for its inexpensive quartz watches whereas Seiko offers some of the most reliable and robust automatic movements. Timex Weekender uses the Japanese Quartz movement which in my experience is better than a basic Seiko 7s movement. But if you are looking for an Automatic Movement watch you can definitely go with Seiko 5.

Final Thought

Let’s be honest here, the Timex Weekend is watch comes between $40 to $80, so the specs and features are not going to blow you away. However, this is a well-made watch that is certainly a great “daily beater” and real timekeeper.
